Health experts warn against homemade formula recipes to combat shortages nationwide

(KNSI) — Baby food shortages are forcing parents to get creative, with some even sharing homemade recipes online. That has health experts begging desperate parents, with pediatrician Dr. Valerie Smith says it can be dangerous, especially for young babies.

“Formula is constructed as closely as possible to mimic breast milk, especially around electrolyte balance. Babies can have a hard time if they aren’t getting the right amount of electrolytes.

She says, instead of going to the pantry, call your pediatrician. Doctors can help get formula as a medical supply. The health department can also help.

Retailers, including CVS, Target, Walmart and Walgreens, are now limiting the amount of formula purchased at one time to avoid formula hoarding.

The infant formula shortage started with a recall in February by Abbott Nutrition after reports of contaminated products making babies sick and aggravating due to supply chain problems. Producers have stepped up their efforts, but there is no set timetable for when the deficit is expected to decrease.
