Retired Olympian Ryan Hall made history in the US participate in the marathon, half marathon and other long-distance running events around the world, setting American records that stand to this day. Recently, the endurance icon spoke with Men’s Health MVP to discuss why he’s dedicating his retirement to heaping up a host of new workout routines — and simple protein shake recipes.
It’s safe to say that many elite distance runners aren’t massive guys by nature. Achieving the level of success Hall has in the sport requires long periods of cardio and strict diets, leaving little time for intense strength training. However, since retiring five years ago, Hall has started creating his own fitness challenges: fueled in part by his protein shake recipes– to help him get the body he wants.
“At this stage of my life, I just want to do these fun, random challenges that I totally make up,” Hall says. “And then I capture it and share it with other people. If they like it, cool. If not, I did something I wanted to do anyway.”
For guys who have trouble bulking up or taking in their calories, he also has some basic advice.
“If I’m bulking, I’ll make a post-workout shake with MuscleTech whey protein…I’ll also add some maltodextrin, which is just a flavorless carb,” Hall added. “It’s a complex carbohydrate, but there are no nutrients in it other than just carbohydrates.”
