A recipe book written by a man from Cullompton has been voted the best in the world for its insight into the art of barbecuing.
Marcus Bawdon, of CountryWoodSmoke and UK Barbecue School, has won the Gourmand Award for his recipe book pierced during a virtual ceremony on Sunday 5 June. The recipe book represented the UK at the awards and took first place for entries from Canada and Australia.
The Gourmand World Cookbook Awards are the food industry’s largest international competition, with entries from 227 countries and regions. Founded in 1995 by the influential Spanish culinary expert Edouard Cointreau, it has since been compared to the Oscars for its celebration of international food culture.

Since starting his journey into the world of barbecue 12 years ago, Marcus has developed a passionate barbecue community in the UK through social media and BBQ Magazine. marcus wrote: pierced in 2021 to inspire more people to pick up the understated cooking technique of barbecuing. Last month he spoke to DevonLive about his passion for the barbecue community and the untapped potential of cooking in Britain.
Marcus said: “Winning an award is a dream come true. For me, barbecuing is just having a great time and sharing experiences with others. I hope Skewered gives people the chance to try something different and feel more confident to explore barbeque further .”
“I’ve always strived to show people what British barbecue can be and this award just shows that. People used to look down on the British barbecue, but that’s not the case anymore. When we win prizes for our recipes, then we must be doing something right.”
