This “Hoover Stew” recipe is almost a century old.
But is there any way it holds up in modern times? Thanks to TikTok† At home cooks try to answer that question.
What is inflation and what causes it?
Hoover Stew, like the now infamous water cake, dates back to the Great Depression, when supplies were limited and taste was paramount. The solution? A “stew” made of macaroni noodles, tomatoes and sliced hot dogs†
The dish reappeared in 2022 thanks to TikToker B.Dylan Hollis (@bdylanhollis), which is known for recreating old recipes in his kitchen†

How to make ‘Hoover Stew’
The ingredients list for this recipe is simple:
-
1 pound sliced hot dogs
-
1 pound elbow macaroni
-
2 cans stewed tomatoes
-
1 can of corn
Start by dumping your macaroni into a large pot of boiling water. While it’s cooking, heat the stewed tomatoes in another large saucepan. After a few minutes, add the corn, then the hot dogs, and let it simmer for about 15 minutes.
Finally, drain the cooked pasta and add it to the other ingredients. There are no spices, salt or pepper in this recipe, because those ingredients were often or were not available unpopular among home cooks.
When you dig into this thing, you immediately notice the absence of spices. This stuff is mostly bland. It almost tastes like less than the sum of the ingredients, which is pretty much the opposite of what you want from a stew.
But, shall we say, there is very much of going around. The recipe allows for a seemingly limitless supply of Hoover Stew, which makes it quite frugal even today. That said, we won’t be making this one again.
